Life Zones

One can view nature through its vivid beauty and lushness or lack thereof – its manmade destruction. Nature has always been a point of inspiration in my artwork, and I want to illustrate how climate change can affect even the most varied and beautiful landscapes.

This piece was inspired by the divergent ecosystems in Arizona from Phoenix to Flagstaff. I have driven from Phoenix to Flagstaff more times than I can count, and I have always been intrigued by how the scenery changes with increasing elevation. I have also seen how each ecosystem has transformed due to climate change. Climate change is not something that only affects ocean levels or burning forests, it impacts all ecosystems, no matter how diverse.

My work utilizes a variety of materials serving as a metaphor for the diverse ecosystems of nature. I use vibrant crocheted plant life to exhibit soft and comforting natural landscapes. In contrast, the destroyed landscapes are formed by cold, rigid steel. In each of the six hanging sculptures, the beauty of nature is mirrored by the ruin of climate change.
